Prorogation of Parliament

It is clear to me particularly in hotly-debated and divisive subjects such as Brexit, Parliament’s role is to do what is in the best interests of the United Kingdom and its citizens.

It is equally clear to me that leaving the EU without any deal would have serious detrimental consequences for the UK economy and indeed many of these are detailed in the government’s baseline assessment of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit, Operation Yellowhammer.

The Prime Minister’s decision to pursue prorogation rather than to persuade Parliament – is, without doubt, a debasement of our democracy and one which I will fight every way I can.

I was proud to sign the Church House declaration on 27th August 2019 and stand by that commitment to fight the subversion of our democracy.

There is a variety of viewpoints on how our country should move forward, but I hope we can all agree that shutting down debate is not one which should be countenanced, let alone endorsed by the government.
