Angela attempts to hand in her 50k petition asking Jeremy Corbyn to support a Peoples Vote

This afternoon (11/02/19) Angela Smith, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge attempted to hand over her almost 50,000 petition to the Leader of the Labour.

Unfortunately, representatives of the Labour Party refused to take the petition, instead insisting she email it to the Jeremy Corbyn.

The petition has been running since Christmas and asks on Labour’s Leader Jeremy Corbyn to back a People’s Vote on Brexit at the earliest opportunity -- and if he is successful in forcing a General Election Labour's manifesto must commit clearly to an immediate People's Vote, in which Labour will campaign to remain.

It has gained massive support with many thousands of Labour Party members declaring their support.

Amongst them and helping Angela deliver the petition was Ayo Adesina who originally voted to leave the EU, but now regrets that choice and would like to see a final say referendum on any deal which might be agreed upon.

Angela said,

I started this petition because like many members I want Jeremy to commit to implementing party policy, as set at conference, which is to support a final say, peoples vote referendum and if we are successful in forcing an early election that a peoples vote becomes a centre piece of the manifesto.

We know a majority of members support a peoples vote, along with a majority of Labour votes. Given the chaos of the government’s position on Brexit and the inability of Parliament to agree a way forward the only answer to let the people have the final say.

Given the importance of the decision and the numbers of people who have signed the petition, I have to say though I was disappointed no one from the Labour Party would accept it. I won’t be deterred though, and I will keep on fighting for a final say referendum. It is the right thing to do and it’s something the Leader of the Labour said he would support.

Notes

The wording of the petition is “ Brexit in any form poses real harm to our country’s future. And with new dangers coming to light every day, we believe that MPs should give the public the final say, which must include an option to remain in the European Union.

We call on Labour’s Leader Jeremy Corbyn to back a People’s Vote on Brexit at the earliest opportunity -- and if he is successful in forcing a General Election then Labour's manifesto must commit clearly to an immediate People's Vote, in which Labour will campaign to remain.”

 westminster

My Parliamentary staff are always happy to arrange tours of the Houses of Parliament for constituents who are visiting London, subject, of course to Parliamentary business (which can sometimes restrict access) on the day.

A full tour of the Palace of Westminster takes in Sovereign's Entrance, Norman Porch, Royal Gallery, Prince's Chamber, the House of Lords Chamber, Central Lobby, Voting Lobby, Members' Lobby, the House of Commons Chamber, St Stephen's Hall and Westminster Hall.

Due to the strong demand for these tours, it is best to get in touch at least 3 months before your planned visit.

In addition to their salary, MPs are allowed to claim various expenses to enable them to carry out duties on behalf of constituents

These expenses cover things such as running offices in the constituency and Westminster, the paying of staff, as well as claiming for a second home, which is a necessary expense for many MPs who have to spend part of the week in Westminster.

Since the General Election of 2010 the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority monitors and sets MPs expenses. They regularly publish Members expenses online on a 3 monthly basis. Click below for more details.
